Strait

Year: 2022

Media: Leather, Satin

Size: 12" x 16" x 115" (approximately)

Inspired by corpus callosotomy effects and avoidance induced memory loss, Strait delves into the intricacies of rationalization, the mind's predisposition to lie to maintain congruence.
Central to this piece is the mask, made from a meticulous process, utilizing a handmade leather quilt, mirroring the methodical yet crude processes of the mind. The mask conceals the subject, symbolic of the protective efforts of the ego. The striped gown references prison uniforms while the length depicts a passage of time.
The term "strait" not only alludes to the geographic landform but also intertwines with the concept of a "straitjacket," depicting the confinement and constriction inherent in rationalization—a mental binding of sorts.
